Number 12

Tonight another grief is heaped upon my grief; so please, don't pull the wine cup from my hand tonight. Last night you set fire to my harvest and walked away; I wish you would pass by my ashes tonight. They tell me stories to calm me, and I'm afraid the thought of her will be driven from my head tonight. Better that the doctor spare me the pain of a cure; I no longer believe in my own recovery tonight.
Explanation: The 'burned harvest' is a classic image for a life or hopes destroyed by the beloved. In the third couplet, the speaker fears losing even the memory of his beloved, which he clings to despite the pain.
