A Tale

The prince of Khotan gave a robe of silk to one of the clear-hearted, enlightened men. The man blossomed with joy like a smiling flower; but he did not put it on. He kissed the prince's hand and said: The prince of Khotan's gift is fine indeed, yet finer still is my own simple cloak. If you are truly free, sleep on the bare ground and be content; do not bow and kiss the floor to earn someone's carpet.
Explanation: Khotan was famed for luxury goods. The closing lines praise the dignity of poverty over accepting favors that cost one's independence.
