Number 4 - Also by Him

You, great one, before whose mind all the secrets of the heavens lie open and clear. This humble well-wisher came to serve you many times, meaning to sing your praises. I had strung together, ready to present, my prayers, my service, my praise and tribute. But your doorkeeper would not let me in, even though I showered him with kindness and patience. I turned back from your gate, wishes unmet, scratching the back of my neck in embarrassment. This nagging doorkeeper is our curse; such is the tale they have handed us. They say prayers can turn a calamity away, so, Lord, turn this calamity aside. But at your gate the opposite is true: here it is the calamity that turns the prayer away.
Explanation: The closing couplets play on the proverb that prayer wards off calamity; here the doorkeeper (the calamity) blocks the poet from even offering his prayer, reversing the saying.
