The Song of the Dawn Bird
Again that sweet-voiced bird of dawn,
right now its passionate frenzy has taken hold of me.
Its melody left a lovely mark on my heart;
its tune burned away all I had in one stroke.
What a heart-stealing, sweet song it played,
calling out to summon the lovers.
Come, you drunken lover, come!
Come, this is the hour of union, come!
Love has arrived; what use is a love letter now?
The beloved is home, so for whom is the letter?
To call for reading the book of secrets
in the beloved's presence is a breach of manners.
So this ledger slipped from my hand,
and another frenzy seized my drunken head.
The hangover of love struck me just then;
I fear I will tear open the veil over the secrets.
Cupbearer, to cure this hangover,
bring another cup this very moment.
From that wine of the tavern of the unburdened,
the one that is medicine for the heart and a cure for the soul.
Be generous with a cup there is no escaping,
so I may be freed from the headache of grief.
Otherwise I will rip the veil of illusion,
and lay bare the secret of the beloved's affairs.
If you pour just a cup or two of that wine now,
you will set this distraught one's matter right.
I will place several lids over this secret,
and turn my steed back from this valley.
I will finish the tale of that king,
and hold my breath right here; and so, farewell.
