Ode 16: In Praise of the Prophet Muhammad

The moon falls short of Muhammad's beauty; no cypress stands as gracefully balanced as he. Before Muhammad's high worth and perfection, the heavens themselves hold no rank or standing. Everyone else is promised their meeting at Judgment Day, but the Night of Ascension was Muhammad's night of union. Adam and Noah, Abraham, Moses and Jesus, all gathered together in the shade of Muhammad. The whole wide world cannot contain his aspiration; look to Judgment Day to see the true scope of Muhammad. Paradise has adorned itself with all its finery, hoping that Muhammad's Bilal might find it worthy. Like the earth, the sky longs to fall down low, so it can kiss the sandals of Muhammad. On the plain of Resurrection the sun and moon give no light; no radiance shines there but the beauty of Muhammad. It is only fitting that sun and moon lose their glow before the two crescent brows of Muhammad. Since my eyes glimpsed his beauty in a dream, no sleep can take me from the vision of Muhammad. Sa'di, if you would live in love and youth, the love of Muhammad and his family is enough.
Explanation: The 'Night of Ascension' (Layla al-Isra) refers to the Prophet's miraculous night journey and ascent to heaven. Bilal was the Prophet's Ethiopian companion and first muezzin, invoked here as a symbol of his household.
