Story No. 14

A man came down with an eye ache and went to a veterinarian to be cured. The vet applied to his eye the very thing he used for the eyes of livestock, and the man went blind. They took the case to a judge, who ruled that no compensation was owed: if he were not an ass, he would not have gone to a vet. The point of this tale is for you to know that anyone who hands a great task to the untried, besides suffering regret, is counted by wise people as a fool. A clear thinking, intelligent person does not give weighty tasks to the base and unfit. A weaver of straw mats, skilled as he may be, is never brought into a silk workshop.
Explanation: The pun in the judge's ruling turns on 'khar' (ass/donkey), meaning both the animal and a fool. The straw mat weaver versus silk workshop contrasts crude skill with refined craft.
