Story No. 4

A respected scholar got into a debate with one of the heretics, may God curse them one by one, but his arguments could not win the day; so he threw down his shield and walked away. Someone asked him: with all the learning and refinement you possess, could you not hold your ground against one godless man? He replied: my knowledge rests on the Quran, the traditions of the Prophet, and the words of the masters, and this man believes in none of them and will not listen. What good is it to me to sit and hear his blasphemy? The one whom neither the Quran nor the sacred word can save, the only answer for him is this: give him no answer at all.
Explanation: The phrase 'threw down his shield' is an idiom for giving up the fight. 'The sacred word' (khabar) refers to hadith, the reported sayings of the Prophet.
