Story 25

One of the sheikhs of Damascus was asked about the true nature of Sufism. He said: In the past there were people scattered in appearance but united in spirit; now there is a crowd united in appearance but scattered in spirit. If your heart drifts elsewhere every hour, you will find no serenity even in solitude. But if you have rank, wealth, crops, and trade, while your heart stays with God, you are still a hermit at heart.
Explanation: The sheikh's point is that true Sufism is inward focus on God, not outward gathering. Even a wealthy person of affairs can be a 'hermit' if the heart remains with God.
