Story No. 10

Someone asked the father who had lost his son: You, bright-souled and wise old man, You caught the scent of his shirt all the way from Egypt, so why couldn't you see him in the well of Canaan? He said: our states are like lightning in this world, one moment visible, the next moment gone. Sometimes we sit upon the highest throne, sometimes we can't even see our own feet. If a seeker could stay fixed in a single state, he would shake both worlds off the back of his hand.
Explanation: The story alludes to Jacob and Joseph: Jacob sensed Joseph's shirt from Egypt yet did not perceive him thrown into a well nearby. The point is the shifting, unstable nature of spiritual states.
