Story 25

I heard that one of the Arab kings told his officials: Double the salary of a certain man, since he keeps watch at the court and stands ready for orders; while the other servants busy themselves with play and amusement and are careless in their duties. A wise, thoughtful man heard this and a cry burst from within him. They asked, 'What did you see?' He said, 'The ranks of servants at the court of God, may He be exalted, follow this very pattern.' If someone comes to serve the king two mornings, on the third the king will surely look on him with kindness. Greatness lies in accepting the command; refusing the command is the sign of being cast out. Whoever bears the face of the upright keeps his head bowed in service at the threshold.
Explanation: The tale draws a parallel between loyal service to an earthly king and steadfast devotion to God, where constancy earns favor and neglect brings loss.
