Ghazal 23

If our company has worn you out, we will go. Just name any service we can do for you. We rose to leave, but your image is so fixed in our breath that wherever we go, without you it is no place to rest. If you must wrestle, pick someone your own strength. We are already broken; what is one more defeat to us? I have committed no crime deserving punishment, yet the law will not spare our drunken Turk from killing people. Thank God that idol proved faithless; perhaps now this idol worshipper of ours will finally repent. Saadi, didn't I tell you? Reaching that tall cypress is beyond the low reach of a small one like us.
Explanation: The 'drunken Turk' is a classic Persian image for a beautiful, ruthless beloved who slays lovers with a glance. The 'tall cypress' stands for the beloved's lofty, unreachable stature.
