Part 10 - A Tale

One night I slept, set on a journey; at dawn I set out to catch a caravan. Then came a terrible wind and dust that darkened the whole world before people's eyes. On the road there was a young girl of the house, wiping the dust from her father with her veil. Her father said to her: my sweet-faced child, you who hold the anxious, loving heart of mine, There won't always be so little dust in these eyes that you can wipe it clean again with a veil. So many breezes will pass over this dust of ours that each speck of us will be carried off somewhere. Your reckless breath, like an unruly beast, drags you at a run toward the edge of the grave. Death will suddenly snap the stirrup loose, and you cannot pull the reins back from the slope.
Explanation: The dust that a veil can now wipe away becomes, in the father's warning, the dust we all turn into after death, scattered by the wind. The 'breath' as an unruly mount racing to the grave is a classic image for a short, ungoverned life.
