A Tale of Fate

I heard that a poor man dropped a gold coin, and the wretch searched hard to find it. In the end he gave up in despair, and someone else, without even looking, found it. The pen wrote out our fortune and misfortune while we were still in the womb. It isn't strength that earns a person's daily bread; in fact the strongest often have the least. Many a clever schemer has died in hardship, while the helpless one walked away with the prize.
Explanation: The 'pen' refers to the pen of destiny, a common image for fate written before birth. 'Walked away with the prize' renders an idiom for winning safety or success.
