A Story on This Theme

A single raindrop slipped from a cloud, and felt ashamed when it saw the vast sea. Where the sea exists, who am I? If it is truly here, then I am nothing. Because it looked on itself with such humility, an oyster took it in and nursed it with its life. The heavens carried its work so far that it became a famous, royal pearl. It rose high because it had made itself low; it knocked at the door of nothingness until it came to be. The wise and discerning choose humility: the branch heavy with fruit bows its head to the ground.
Explanation: The pearl forming inside the oyster is a classic Persian image for how self-effacement yields hidden worth. The bowing fruit-laden branch is a proverb: the more one has, the humbler one becomes.
