The Thirsty Man Who Welcomed Death

A thirsty man, as he was giving up his life, said: How lucky is the one who dies in water. A naive boy said to him: How strange, since you're dying anyway, what does it matter, wet lips or dry? He answered: Won't I at least wet my mouth, so that I pour this sweet life down my own throat? A thirsty man may fall into a deep pool; who would think the drowning one dies still thirsty? If you are a lover, seize the hem of the Beloved; and if He says, give up your life, say: take it. You'll taste the paradise of ease only when you've first passed through the fire of the trial. Those who plant the seed endure the hardship; when the harvest comes in, they rest content. In this gathering, the one who won his desire was the one who caught the last cup at the final round.
Explanation: The 'thirsty man drowning yet still thirsty' warns that mere nearness to the Beloved is not enough; one must actively drink of love. The 'last cup at the final round' evokes the wine of union reserved for those who endure to the end.
