On the Fruit of Generosity

Be generous, my son. A human being is won over by kindness, while a wild animal is caught by a snare. Bind your enemy's neck with acts of kindness, for this is a rope no sword can cut. When an enemy meets with grace, kindness, and generosity, no more malice will rise up in him. Do no wrong, or you will suffer wrong even from a good friend; no good harvest grows from the seed of evil. If you are harsh and difficult with a friend, he will no longer want to lay eyes on you. But if a man is kind even to his enemies, it will not be long before they become his friends.
Explanation: The 'rope no sword can cut' contrasts binding by kindness with binding by force, a central image in Saadi's ethics of generosity.
