The Beloved's Full Reply

It would be better if you went your own way and chose patience for this road. From now on, stay home like sensible people; don't be anyone's madman like this. Don't act bold before my drunken eyes; a fox has no business hunting lions. Don't play love with the snare of my curls; this is a game that stretches on and on. Whoever fails to know his own standing suddenly loses all he has. How could a wretched beggar like you ever reach union with a king like me? What comes of tearing your collar, of shedding tears and pouring dust on your head? This frenzy will get you nowhere; all this crying and wailing will do you no good. I don't care if your heart turns to blood; these tricks and spells have no hold on me. Whoever loves will find pain: red tears and a pale face. You, this wretch with neither honor nor name, what sort are you, and of what stock? You, Majnun, who bear the name of lover, hold the wine of my longing in your cup. It's better for you to sit with my pain, for if you saw my face, you'd gamble your life away. Haven't you heard, you who are far from reason, that the moth cannot bear the light? Go, make peace with sorrow and disgrace, for endurance is what makes lovers.
Explanation: The moth and the flame is a classic Persian image for the lover consumed by the beloved. Majnun is the archetypal mad lover of Layla.
