In Praise of Sultan Mo'ezzeddin Oveys Jalayeri

Good fortune walks hand in hand with the fortune of our world conqueror; the world bends to the will of our triumphant king. Sultan Oveys, whose majestic qualities lie beyond all our guessing, imagining, and thought. You are the king whose word, if you speak it, would be enough; the whole world has been brought to life by the grace of our speech. The foundation of justice stands firm and the arm of faith is strong, thanks to our clear judgment and our subtle, discerning mind. The pillars of tyranny and the rules of cruelty are torn down by the dread of our arrow and the world seizing dagger. The face of the earth, once drowned in the flood of chaos, today rests under the shelter of our mace and spear. By the command of the Creator we are the support and refuge of a whole world of people; our kindness is all embracing and our generosity boundless. Fortune is a servant who grew great in our company; good luck is a slave born of our own house. The key of the realm and the guarantor of every man and woman's bread is our sword, our arrow, and our gem scattering pen. Wherever there is talk of military affairs, the blade's edge is our tongue and the pen is our interpreter. Old and young have all followed our counsel, since the judgment of age here serves the fortune of youth. The sun became king of the sky only because every morning it keeps vigil at our threshold. Now that the seven lands of the world are ours, fortune beats the fivefold royal drum in our name. In whatever direction our banner appears, divine aid rides beside us and victory shares our reins. From the carpet of dust to the height of the highest heaven, whatever hero turns his back in flight, it is our bow that did it. Every wish we have asked of our God, success has pledged that it is under our guarantee. Everyone in all the world, like Obeyd, rests at ease under the shelter of our protection and safety. O king, the age of chaos, unrest, and tyranny is gone; and today, the finest of all ages is our own age. In time of war, from all who slay our enemies rises the fame of our greatness and our name and mark. God in His grace has answered our prayer, for the prayer for your life is the chant upon our tongue.
Explanation: The 'fivefold royal drum' (panj nowbat) refers to the ceremonial drum beats sounded five times a day for a sovereign king. In the closing couplet the poet Obeyd names himself, a common signature device.
