Chapter Seven: On Modesty, Loyalty, Truthfulness, Mercy, and Compassion

The wise have said that modesty means holding the self in check, so that a person avoids any shameful act that would bring reproach. The Prophet, peace be upon him, said: 'Modesty is part of faith.' Loyalty means committing to the path of mutual support: repaying and answering for whatever kindness has reached you. In the clear text of revelation it is written: 'Whoever fulfills what he has pledged to God, He will grant him a great reward.' Truthfulness means keeping your heart honest with your friends, so that nothing false passes your lips. And mercy and compassion mean that when you see someone in distress or in an unpleasant state, you feel for them and set your whole effort on relieving it.
