On His Visit During Days of Illness

How blessed is the sight of you, an omen of good fortune; the manner of noble leadership becomes you well. All your good fortune is faith and the true path; all your deeds are justice and worship. The house of religious law is built up by you; the foundation of virtue is raised high by you. Your nights and days are steeped in good works; your every hour brings knowledge and benefit. You found me in a state that cried 'show me the truth'; I was that lost, that far from any happiness, that my soul was drowning in surrender, caught between the hidden world and this seen one. My spirit and body without connection, my stillness and my movement without will. My senses dismissed from their work, left idle in a corner of dullness. My mind so crowded with tangled fantasies, like a pile of scattered papers on your registry. Stillness spread over my limbs from every side, yet the turmoil of my heart only grew. Life had grown weary of the soul's company; each one wanted to pull away from the other. Now and then my breath went back and forth to the street of living, with a hundred struggles. The sicknesses had overturned the law of health; all the usual order of things had failed. My eye found no rest in any color, my mind drew no relief from any scent. From despair, nothing was placed in my mouth except the words of the final testament of faith. The physician grew helpless with my case, though he brought all kinds of courage to bear. My hopelessness reached such a point that they were reciting Yasin over me for the end. Even the gall bladder trembled with the fear of dropsy as nature and the body waged their war. My whole being stood eyes shut on the edge, death drawing the sword of annihilation. Suddenly a voice of comfort reached me: the master has honored you with a visit. From that single revival I came to know what the return to life on Judgment Day will be like. I saw it as if, in the world of existence, that moment was my hour of nearness and grace. His life-giving breath gave my soul new life; may his years and fortune keep on increasing.
Explanation: 'Show me the truth' echoes Moses' plea to God (Quran 7:143). Reciting Yasin (Quran chapter 36) is traditionally done at a person's deathbed.
