The Soul's Grief of Separation
That blessed, auspicious bird, the human soul, the intimate companion of God the Majestic,
when it stepped down from the higher world, poor thing, it landed in a cage by the decree of eternity.
It found itself living, terrified, in a heap of dust, grieving for its ancient homeland.
So much so that at the moment of birth, the child clearly comes out crying in protest.
Hand on its head, head on its knees from sorrow, both arms pressed tight against its sides.
The instant it is parted from its mother, it breaks into weeping from the pain of separation.
All of this is the effect of a spiritual sorrow, the mourning for parting from a spiritual beauty.
Before this it was immersed in the vision of the Beloved, blessed with union with the Friend.
Now it has become the companion of the pain of separation, aching for its own Friend, far from home.
