On Knowing Hypocrisy

Anyone who wears the cloak of hypocrisy ranks lower than the stray dogs in the alley. True poverty of spirit isn't in show, glitter, and display; the dervish's crown is turning away from both worlds. Never let the cloak of pretense sit on your head; don't mistake the devil's spittle for rain from heaven. You must walk the road by the light of knowledge, so you don't suddenly tumble to the bottom of a well.
Explanation: The 'cloak of hypocrisy' (dalq-e riya) refers to the patched dervish robe worn falsely to appear pious. 'Both worlds' means this life and the afterlife.
