Part 7: Rostam and Kamus
A kinsman of Kamus, named Saveh, was there,
proud and famous, his ambitions reaching everywhere.
He came forward to fight the mighty Rostam,
an Indian blade gripped tight in his hand.
He circled to the left and to the right,
demanding vengeance from Rostam for Kamus.
He said to Rostam: 'You raging elephant,
now you will see the waves of the Nile rise against you.'
'Now I will take fierce revenge for Kamus,
if I am left alive after this battle.'
When Saveh's words reached Rostam,
he raised his hand and drew his heavy mace.
The great warrior struck the mace upon his head,
and his life left his body in agony.
He swung and smashed his helmet and his skull,
until you could no longer tell his head from his body.
He hurled him down and drove Rakhsh over him,
and no trace of Saveh was left in the world.
He toppled the Kushan banner to the ground,
and from that stroke he filled the army with grief.
No one could stand their ground before him;
he turned the brains of every head to dust.
Then from the right wing he swept to the left,
and the whole army, every man of it, was overcome with dread.
