Alexander Takes the Throne
When Alexander sat upon the throne, he said:
May wisdom be the constant companion of a king's soul.
The true victor in this world is God alone;
any ruler who does not fear Him is doomed to evil.
Good and bad alike will pass, make no mistake;
no one escapes the grip of time.
Whoever comes to this royal court
seeking justice from us against us,
whether at the hour of audience or at midnight,
will get an answer the moment they open their lips.
Since the Victorious One granted us this glory
and opened the door of triumphant fortune to us,
let all our subjects receive their share,
in the mountains, the deserts, the seas, and the cities.
For five years we will take no tribute from the world,
except from those who claim to be our equals.
We will give abundant gifts to the poor,
and take nothing from those who already have.
When Alexander had spoken these good words,
the king's own heart was wedded to justice.
A cry of praise rose up from the palace
for this just ruler of the earth.
After that the assembly dispersed,
and the world ruler sat down with his counselor.
